Fiorentina, who had Egypt defender Ahmed Hegazi on the bench, thrashed Pescara 5-1 and hoped Siena would beat Milan in another game.

Surprisingly, the already-relegated Siena were leading by a goal until six minutes from time when Mario Balotelli equalized from the spot to put his side level on points with Fiorentina.

But three minutes from the final whistle, France defender Philippe Mexes snatched the victory for Milan who clinched third place to qualify for the Champions League playoffs.

Fiorentina will have to settle for a Europa League playoff.
