On June 7 1970, England goalkeeper Gordon Banks wrote his name in history books by making an extraordinary save to deny Brazil legend Pele in a World Cup match.

Although Brazil won 1-0 by a Jairzinho goal, the game is always remembered for one incident that stunned FIFA’s Player of the Century.

“I have scored more than a thousand goals in my life and the thing people always talk to me about is the one I didn't score!” Pele said on the Banks save.

“From the moment I headed it, I was sure it had gone in. I had already began to jump to celebrate the goal. Then I looked back and I couldn't believe it hadn't gone in. It was a phenomenal save.”

World Cup 1966 champion Banks said: “They won't remember me for winning the World Cup, it'll be for that save. That's how big a thing it is. People just want to talk about that save.”
