Egypt U-20 coach Rabie Yassin believes that the brief spells that Saleh Gomaa and Ahmed Refaat had in Europe negatively affected them ahead of the World Cup.

The ENPPI pair is hoping to seal Europe moves this summer, having had trials in several clubs only a few weeks before the World Cup in Turkey.

Star midfielder Gomaa, who spent a few days with Anderlecht and Borussia Dortmund, was dropped from Egypt’s starting line-up in the opening game against Chile.

On the other hand, winger Refaat, who went for trials at Basel and Sevilla, had a poor game and was substituted before the hour mark.

“I think that the time Saleh and Ahmed spent in Europe has had a negative impact on them psychologically and mentally,” Egypt manager Yassin told reporters in Antalya.

“We had to do a lot of work with their morale ahead of the World Cup. Their absence during part of our build-up has also kept them apart from the rest of their teammates.”

Egypt’s second group game takes place on Wednesday against Iraq, who secured a dramatic draw with England on Sunday.
