Congo see off hosts Canada 2-0 in Edmonton to book their ticket, while minnows Gambia stunned Portugal 2-1 in Montreal.

The two African nations join Nigeria and Zambia, who already made their way into the next round.

In Edmonton, Ermejea Ngakosso opened the scoring for Congo after 26 minutes, and Gracia Ikouma ensured the victory at the hour mark.

Congo finish third of Group A on four points, but they secured their last 16 place as one of four best third-placed nations.

Gambia faced a more difficult encounter than Congo, as they had to play most of the second half without their skipper Ken Jammeh, who was sent off.

However, a 68th minute own goal from Portugal defender Rui Patricio settled the game for the Gambians, who completed the fight back after Ousman Jallow's first half strike cancelled out Feliciano Condesso's opener for Portugal.

Gambia claimed second spot and cruise into the next round with six points, three behind leaders Mexico.
