On June 12 1990, Egypt registered a historic 1-1 draw with reigning European champions Holland in the World Cup in Italy.

The mighty Dutch – boasting the likes of Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard and Ronald Koeman – were tipped for a comprehensive victory over the Pharaohs in Palermo.

But Egypt gave in a stunning performance and had a number of chances to pull off a major upset, only for Wim Kieft to come off the bench and score in the 58th minute.

With seven minutes to go, Hesham Yakan sent a brilliant long ball to Hossam Hassan, who was brought down by Koeman to hand Egypt a late penalty.

As number one taker Hassan was on the ground, Magdi Abdul-Ghani stepped up to net Egypt’s only goal since 1934.

“I was supposed to be taking it but I was still on the ground when I saw Magdi holding the ball and getting ready to shoot,” Hassan said a few years ago.

“I didn’t want to argue about it and he took it. When Magdi shot I felt the goal suddenly became wider so that we can score!”
