The first match of the day saw Germany thrash England 4-1, but the talking point was that infamously disallowed Frank Lampard goal when it was 2-1.

The England midfielder’s shot crossed the line by a yard, yet the referee and his assistant failed to spot it.

“I knew it was a goal. I didn’t see the replay yet but I don’t need to,” said Lampard after the game.

“I don’t quite know how you can get that one wrong when I saw it from taking the shot and the referee was not far away from me.”

The controversy was not over as Argentina saw off Mexico later in the same day, with Carlos Tevez scoring a crucial opener when he was about three yards offside.

“I know I was offside, I know it was selfish but as long as they say it was a goal it's OK for me and the team,” said Argentina striker Tevez.
