An out-of-sorts Ahli side were condemned to a historic 5-1 defeat at the hands of Mexico's Monterrey in the Club World Cup fifth-place playoff in Marrakesh.

Monterrey, who lost 2-1 to hosts Raja Casablanca in the quarter-finals, totally outclassed the African champions to condemn them to a five-goal festival, surpassing fellow Mexicans Pachuca who walloped the Reds 4-2 in 2008.

The win is the CONCACAF Cup holders' second against Ahli in 12 months, having also beaten the Reds in last year's third-place playoff in Japan.

Monterrey went ahead after just three minutes through Neri Cardozo before being quickly pegged back by Emad Meteb five minutes later.

The Mexicans ruthlessly replied to Ahli's leveler via further three first-half goals from Cesar Delgado, Leobardo Lopez and a Humberto Suazo spot-kick.

Delgado then completed the rout with another goal five minutes past the hour-mark to become the competition’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Total control

After seeing an early header from Meteb flow narrowly wide, Ahli were on the back foot after just three minutes with Cardozo capitalizing on shambolic Reds' defending to slot home the opener past Sherif Ekrami.

Ahli, however, were handed a lifeline five minutes later when Meteb controlled a superb long ball by Ahmed Shedid inside the box before striking between the keeper's legs from tight angle the leveler.

Monterrey's second goal summed up Ahli's misery of the night, with Delgado latching onto an incisive through pass before beating the Reds' rearguard to make it two one.

The Mexicans compounded Ahli's woes further when a superb volley from Lopez was poorly handled by Ekrami, allowing in the third.

The CONCACAF Cup champions, however, weren't done yet as defense stalwart Wael Gomaa was guilty of tripping Lopez inside the area as Suazo made it four before heading into the dressing rooms.

Despite looking confident early in the second half, Monterrey seemed determined to make Ahli's World Cup exit painful when a superb team move ended up with Suazo playing Delgado in for the fifth goal.
