Minister Taher Abou-Zeid's decision to sack Ahli's board has been suspended by Prime Minister Hazem Al-Beblawi.

Abou-Zeid's ministry of sports announced on Saturday that the Ahli board, led by Hassan Hamdi, has been dismantled as its members face criminal prosecution for financial infringements.

It was announed that former Egypt goalkeeper Adel Heikal will be in charge.

However, the decision was overruled by Egyptian PM Al-Beblawi.

"According to the cabinet affairs as well as the new constitution the decision of sports minister to cancel the extension of Ahly's board has been suspended," read a statement from the prime minster's office on Saturday.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports suggest that Abou-Zeid has stepped down as minister of sports in protest over the suspension of his ruling.

It is also believed that the Hamdi's board intend to 'sue' former star Abou-Zeid for 'damaging their reputation'.

The current Ahli board was expected to make way since last May but they were given an extension after elections had been postponed for political instability.
