Costa Rican outfit Deportivo Saprissa qualified to the Club World Championship (CWC) semi-finals after defeating Australia's Sydney FC club 1-0 in the match that took place on Monday.

Christian Bolanos secured Saprissa’s victory in the 47th minute after firing the ball into the Sydney goal off a Randall Azofeifa pinpoint pass.

Saprissa will next face European champions Liverpool in the competition semis match that will take place on Thursday.

Sydney defender Alvin Ceccoli received his marching orders in the 81st minute after going into a rough tackle with the Saprissa goalkeeper leaving a 10-man Sydney even more helpless in front of the more experienced Costa Ricans.

The Australian side will meet Egyptian club Ahli in the fifth-place play-off that will take place on Friday.
