Spanish international Juan Carlos Valeron will miss the 2006 World Cup in Germany after picking up a knee injury on Sunday.

The Deportivo La Coruna playmaker tore the cruciate ligament in his left knee during his side’s 2-2 draw with Real Mallorca in the Primera Liga over the weekend.

The 30-year-old midfielder will be ruled out for six to eight months, Deportivo said in statement on their official website.

Despite not being named in Luis Aragones's Spain squads over the past year, Valeron has been tipped to return to the national team following his exemplary displays with Depor.

Deportivo coach Joaquin Caparros explained Valeron’s significance to his side.

"He is important in the dressing room, and for the goals he scores. If he took penalties he would be the side's top scorer," Caparros was quoted as saying by Spanish daily Marca.

"We will try to make sure his absence doesn't affect us, but it will be difficult," Caparros added.
