Tottenham Hotspurs manager Martin Jol criticized Egyptian striker Ahmad Hossam 'Mido' for his confrontation with national team coach Hassan Shehata in the African Cup of Nations.

"What Mido did was wrong. I'd told him to keep quiet and then he did this stupid thing. He should have behaved a bit better," Jol told BBC Radio on Sunday.

Mido was fined and banned by the Egyptian FA for six months after a row with national team coach Hassan Shehata during his side's 2-1 victory over Senegal in the African Cup of Nations semis.

The 23-year-old striker traded angry words with Shehata on the touchline when he was substituted in the closing stages of the match when the score was tied to 1-1.

But substitute Amr Zaki headed the winner home on his first touch to lift Egypt to the final and leave Mido facing more troubles with Egyptian fans and officials.

Jol said Mido shouldn't have protested that way and stressed that he was never a troublemaker during his spell at White Heart Lane.

"In this one you have to say that the coach was right, because the substitute scored the goal and they won the game. A winning coach is always right," he said.

"He has been no trouble at all for me since he came here. He's very helpful to us - but he's a young kid and has had to grow up quickly."

Quick Recovery

Jol said on Saturday he was sure that Mido will quickly recover from frustration and will return a better player.

"I think he will be more ambitious when he comes back," Jol was quoted as saying by The Mirror.

"Hopefully the whole experience will be positive. He has always been good for us, he is a good pro. He has a great mentality during games, he is a winner.

The Dutch coach also admitted that his side missed Mido's efforts in the past few weeks.

"We haven't won any of the last three away games, so we have obviously missed him up front. He gives us great balance."

Mido may make his return to Premiership action on Sunday when Tottenham play Sunderland away.
