FIFA featured a story about Egypt’s home soil victory in the 25th edition of the African Cup of Nations on their official website noting that the Pharaohs joined football’s global elite.

Egypt were compared to world champions Brazil who won the World Cup five times after adding a fifth continental title to their silver ware cabinet (1957, 1959, 1986, 1998 and 2006).

Ghana and Cameroon had been at level with the Pharaohs for the records of most titles won (4 each) up until the 2006 Egypt tournament.

FIFA noted Egypt’s individual achievements in midfielder Ahmed Hassan, who walk away with the player of the tournament award, and Essam Al-Hadari who was named goalkeeper of the tournament.

Cameroon and Tunisia received an honorable mention for their sparkling performances while Guinea and DR Congo appeared as the tournament’s dark horses.

FIFA’s feature slammed World Cup debutants Ghana, Togo and Angola for their below-par performances in Egypt.
