Abdul-Monsef said that he talked with Zamalek officials about being Abdul-Wahed Al-Sayed’s replacement in their local match, during Ahli club’s honorary ceremony for Egypt’s coaching staff and players.
“I was the first-choice goalkeeper for Zamalek during the local league round-one, Arab Champions League (ACL) and the African Champions League campaigns, and nothing new happened during or after the African Cup of Nations campaign, neither of us played,” Abdul-Monsef told Filgoal.com exclusively on Tuesday.
“After we came back from the African Cup, we held to trainings, the first was more of a recreational training to bring back the necessary harmony between the players, while the second included serious training, in which I excelled. I don’t know why I was benched,” he added.
Abdul-Monsef became team favorite after replacing the then injured Al-Sayed, where he put on a series of brilliant performances during his side’s turbulent period in the local league round one.
Nevertheless, both goal-tenders remained seated during Egypt’s African Cup campaign, given Ahli goalkeeper Essam Al-Hadari’s excelled performance throughout the tournament.
“If the coaching staff thinks I’m only good as a substitute, then it’s best if they let me go,” the talented goalkeeper said.
The Zamalek shot-stopper has reportedly received a preliminary offer from a Belgian club before the African Cup through international teammate Ahmed Hossam “Mido”, but it’s still undetermined whether the deal will be sealed or not.
