A first-half goal from Mohamed Abdul-Wahab gave Ahli a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Enppi in the Egyptian League on Thursday.

The victory placed Ahli second on 38 points, just one point behind leaders Zamalek with the Egyptian Champions still have three matches in hand.

Enppi’s third defeat of the season left them in third spot with 31 points.

Ahli started without seven key players due to injury and coach Manuel Jose was forced to field many reserves like Ahmed Hassan, Flavio Amado and skipper Hadi Khashaba, who took part in the second period.

Enppi, on the other hand, appeared with all their regular starting line-up except international striker Amr Zaki who completed a move to the Russian League earlier this month.

Ahli’s first chance was in the 21st minute when Egypt playmaker Mohamed Abou-Treika unleashed a powerful free-kick that went just wide.

Abdul-Wahab grabbed the lead in the 35th minute through a second free-kick that he superbly delivered past Enppi keeper Mostafa Kamal.

Angolan striker Amado failed to double the lead on the hour mark when he was set by Abou-Treika in the box before he rounded a defender and fired the ball wide with the goal at his mercy.

In the 72nd minute, referee Samir Osman made a controversial call when he denied Enppi what looked a clear penalty when Islam Al-Shater blocked the ball with his hand into the box.
