Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger revealed his desire on Sunday to sign Real Madrid and England midfielder David Beckham.

"Of course I would take him with all his baggage. I personally believe that Beckham has no big baggage," Wenger told The News of the World.

"The only baggage here is his stardom status. That's not a problem," the Frenchman added.

The 30-year-old England captain moved to Real Madrid from Arsenal's arch-rivals Manchester United in 2002.

Beckham announced that he wanted to extend his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu but the recent controversy in the Royal club that saw President Florentino Perez resigning may jeopardize his plans.

"We're not desperate to buy anybody. But if you find an exceptional player who can add a little class where we need it, we'll do it. He could be one of them," Wenger said.

"You ask me 'do you rate him as a player?' I say yes. Could he play for Arsenal? Yeah, I think he has the qualities to do it."
