Substitute Bastian Schweinsteiger broke the deadlock just after the interval before Oliver Neuville doubled the lead in the 73rd minute.

Miroslav Klose and captain Michael Ballack scored a goal each in just six minutes to seal the rout while Steve Cherundolo pulled the consolation goal for the visitors.

The big victory was sufficient for Juergen Klinsmann’s side to make up for a similar score-line defeat against European rivals Italy earlier in March.

Germany are drawn in Group A and will play Costa Rica in the World Cup opener in June ninth while the United States are placed in Group D with Italy, Czech Republic and African debuting side Ghana.
