Champions League runners-up AC Milan were held to a goalless draw by French hosts Lyon in the first-leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday.

The semi-final berth is open for all probabilities as the two teams will clash in one week time at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium.

Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko made the first attempt on goal early in the seventh minute when he latched on to Gennaro Gattuso's through pass and hit a low-shot that was denied by Lyon keeper Gregory Coupet.

Five minutes later, Shevchenko edged closer to grab the lead after he received Ricardo Kaka's back-heel pass inside the area but his shot was brilliantly saved by French international Coupet.

In the 26th minute, Lyon midfielder Benoit Pedretti sent a long-range free kick that no one toughed it but Milan's Brazilian keeper Dida tipped the ball away.

Seven minutes before the final whistle, Lyon Portuguese midfielder Tiago had a powerful shot denied by Dida, who produced a fine display throughout the encounter.
