Bayern beat Bielefeld, close on title

German champions Bayern Munich beat Arminia Bielefeld 2-0 at home on Saturday to maintain their position on top of the Bundesliga table.

Bayern midfielder Michael Ballack, who is close to depart in the off-season, put Bayern ahead in the 69th minute before Mehmet Scholl sealed the win four minutes later.

Bayern are on course to retain their title as they sit on top of the Bundesliga table with 69 points, four clear of second-placed Hamburg SV.

Germany captain Ballack snatched the lead for the hosts in the 69th minute when he sent a long-range drive that hit the post then deflected off Bielefeld keeper's body into the back of the net.

Substitute Scholl widened the gap in the 73rd minute when he received Philipp Lahm's pass on the edge of the area before firing a powerful low-shot into the left corner of the net.

Elsewhere, Hamburg kept their title hopes alive after they defeated MSV Duisburg 2-0.

An own goal by Uwe Mohrle gave Hamburg the lead in the 24th minute before Ailton added the second six minutes later.

In other matches, Schalke draw 1-1 with Cologne, Hertha Berlin tied Borussia Dortmund 0-0, Bayer Leverkusen beat Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1, Werder Bremen were held to a 1-1 draw with Wolfsburg and Frankfurt tied Mainz 0-0.
