Tottenham midfielder Michael Carrick, who was included in England’s squad for the World Cup, said that the team were looking great ahead of the tournament, adding that it's one of the best England sides he has ever played with.

"The squad is as good as I've ever been involved in, the spirit is amazing and the lads are getting on very well, I think everyone is just looking forward to it now," Carrick told Sky Sports on Wednesday.

Carrick, who led Tottenham to fifth place in the Premiership standings, also said that he dreams of securing a first-team spot in the World Cup finals, of Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney fails to recuperate in time.

"I'm happy to be here and training alongside the lads, it will be a dream come true for me if I get a starting place in the team," Carrick stressed.

With Rooney's injury, it's expected that England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson may choose to play with one striker, most likely Newcastle’s Michael Own, and a five-man midfield behind him, which would give Carrick the chance to play alongside Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

"The midfielders that we have got, there's not a lot between any of us, it's just different styles for different occasions," Carrick said.

England are drawn in Group B in the World Cup alongside Paraguay, Sweden and Trinidad and Tobago, they will kick-off their games on June 10th against Paraguay.
