"Neville has a calf problem and is doubtful, very doubtful for tomorrow," England coach Sven Goran Eriksson was quoted as saying by Sky Sports on Wednesday.

''We'll see tomorrow morning, he's going to do the scan now and we will know a bit better later," he added.

The former Lazio boss said he is already preparing other alternatives in case the Manchester United defender fails to recover in time.

"(Jamie) Carragher is one choice, the other choice is (Owen) Hargreaves - one of them will take his place if Neville does not make it," he said.

England are looking to secure their place in the World Cup's second round, as they currently lie first in Group B with three points after beating Paraguay 1-0.
