De Rossi was dismissed with a straight red card after he intently elbowed McBride in an aerial challenge during Italy's 1-1 draw with the USA.

The Roma player has already served one of the four matches during the 2-0 victory over the Czech Republic and still has to sit on the sidelines in the next three rounds should Italy reach the semis.

Neither the FIFA nor the tournament's websites reported the ban. No comment has been issued from the Italian camp so far.

Genaro Gattuso is most likely to cover De Rossi's absence.
