The two teams' first-leg is due to be played in Banjul on September 1st or 2nd or 3rd while the return-leg will be held in Cairo on October 6th, 7th or 8th.

While Cameroon, Nigeria, Morocco, Angola, Ghana, Mali and Tunisia were all awarded first-round bye according to their previous results in the competition. 34 teams will be participating in the first round.

Another second play-off round will be played before the final 12 qualifying teams are drawn into three groups with each group winner qualifying to the Olympics.

African representatives clinched two titles of the last three with Nigeria winning the 1996 Atlanta games and Cameroon snatching the title in Sydney in 2000.
