Abdul-Monsef the Scapegoat

Zamalek coach Manuel Cajuda's decision to offload goalkeeper Mohamed Abdul-Monsef needs to be explained as the Cairo giants don't have plenty of keepers to choose from next season.

Due to the injury of Egyptian international and regular Zamalek keeper Abdul-Wahed Al-Sayed that will rule him out of the new season's early stages, Cajuda should have thought carefully before making this weird decision.

Without a doubt, Monsef was not to blame for Zamalek disappointing performances and results during the past two seasons; on the contrary, he put on some good displays in the Egyptian League campaign.

But the former Dina Farms keeper made a negative reputation after letting-in many goals against arch-rivals Ahli, but it was the fault of the team's flimsy defense.

Nevertheless, he became the scapegoat after every hefty defeat.

Whatever the reasons behind the dispute between Cajuda and Monsef, the Portuguese coach put himself in a critical situation where he will be forced to search the market for a new guardian to fill the void left by Al-Sayed's injury.

Third-choice keeper Wael Zenga, who in no way resembles Italy's great Walter Zenga, lacks everything needed to stand between the sticks, starting from flexibility and ending with experience.

Zamalek have handed a trial to several keepers from the African continent but none of them were capable of catching the eyes of the coaching staff.

It remains to be seen whether Zamalek will add a new keeper or have to cope again with another weak point.
