Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard criticized Sven-Goran Eriksson's decision to leave out Jermain Defoe from England's 2006 World Cup squad.

Lampard said in his autobiography, which is being serialized in the News of the World that the former England coach made a mistake by including only four strikers in the squad.

"Questions had been asked about why we didn't have five strikers in the squad when two of our forwards went into the tournament trying to recover fitness," said the England international.

England's starting strikers Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney were nursing injuries ahead of the World Cup.

Eriksson opted to call-up inexperienced Theo Walcott alongside Liverpool's Peter Crouch to complete the attacking quartet.

"Personally, I'd have included Jermain as well. I played with him at West Ham and he is a natural goal-scorer," he added.

England were ousted from the quarter-finals after losing to Portugal in a penalty shootout.
