UEFA Cup holders Sevilla thrashed Barcelona 3-0 in Monaco to snatch the European Super Cup on Friday.

Renato opened the score early in the first-half before Mali striker Frederic Kanoute doubled the lead just before the break.

Enzo Maresca ensured the win in the dying minutes to hand Sevilla their first European Super Cup in history.

Barcelona's approach to the game seemed to be over-confident after enjoying an impressive form recently, winning the Spanish Super Cup after beating Espanyol 4-0 on aggregate as well as crushing Bayern Munich 4-0 in a friendly.

But surprisingly, Renato put Sevilla ahead in the seventh minute from the rebound after Luis Fabiano's initial shot was parried by Barca keeper Victor Valdes.

Former Tottenham striker Kanoute added the second one minute before the interval after his backward header found its way past Valdes, who was too late to return to his goal after punching away a corner-kick.

Italian midfielder Maresca, who was outstanding in Sevilla's UEFA Cup triumph, completed the rout from the penalty spot after Antonio Puerta was brought down by Carles Puyol inside the area.
