Atletico acquired the services of the Portuguese international for a reported fee of 9 million Euros ($11.55 million).

"I want to help the history of this club to become even more important. I believe that with the help of my team mates we can achieve our aims and be among the best," Maniche told a press conference.

The 28-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Chelsea, but the English champions opted not to sign him permanently.

Maniche's impressive display with Portugal during the World Cup finals earned him many suitors as French side Monaco were competing with Atletico on his signature.

"There was interest from a large number of clubs, but I kept hoping that I would be able to join Atletico," he said.

"Now I'm here I want to do everything I can to help Atletico get back to the top."
