Bayern Munich coach Felix Magath admitted on Monday that his side's main target in the UEFA Champions League is limited to advancing past the group stage.

The Bundesliga champions play in Group B alongside Inter Milan, Sporting Lisbon and Spartak Moscow, whom they will clash with on Tuesday in the opener.

"We are just expected to get past the group stage. After that, it depends on the draw," Magath told German magazine Kicker in an interview published on their website.

Bayern suffer midfield problems after losing Germany captain Michael Ballack to Chelsea in the off-season.

Brazilian midfielder Ze Roberto also left the team after the World Cup, preferring to play for Santos.

The void left by the duo hasn't yet been filled and Magath believes that the team need time to develop before getting back on the winning track.

"We traded experience for new blood so we are not as ready for clinching titles as we were in the past couple of years. On the other hand, we are developing as a team," he said.

Under Magath, Bayern won the German double for two successive seasons but failed to appear beyond the quarter-finals in the Champions League.

They were handed a 5-2 aggregate defeat by AC Milan in the round of 16 of the tournament.
