Vincenzo Montella poked home to give Roma a 1-0 victory over Empoli on Sunday to go top of the Serie A table.

The former Empoli striker found the back of the net in the 23rd minute after being set up by a cross from Max Tonetto.

Roma's fourth victory this season raised their point tally to 12 in first spot, one point ahead of Inter Milan, whose misery continued after a 1-1 draw at Cagliari.

Leonardo Colucci put the hosts ahead when he caught the Inter back four napping to drill Mauro Esposito's cross home in the 17th minute.

But World Cup winner Fabio Grosso leveled seven minutes from the break with an easy tap-in from close range.

Inter also lost their prolific striker Hernan Crespo who picked up a muscle injury after a full-stretch try on a long ball.

Roberto Mancini's side were handed a 2-0 defeat against Bayern Munich at home in the Champions League earlier this week.

In another match, Milan were tied 0-0 by Siena to register the third point of the season and remain in 12th place.
