US Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire have failed to lure French legend Zinedine Zidane out of retirement, a club official said.

''We reached out to Zidane, but so has every other MLS club. The feedback we've all gotten is that he's retired,'' Chicago Fire general manager Guppy told the Chicago Tribune on Thursday.

Zidane announced his retirement following the 2006 World Cup in Germany but many teams were hopeful of bringing back the former Real Madrid man to the playing field.

A new salary-cap rule has been voted by MLS teams last November in order to enable teams sign more star players.

Real Madrid midfielder David Beckham opened the door for such moves after signing a five-year contract with Los Angeles Galaxy worth $250 million.
