The 28-year-old striker has initially sustained an injury in the thumb of his left hand during Bremen's 2-0 defeat to Schalke in the Bundesliga on Sunday.

However, he wanted to take part in Switzerland game but was dropped after falling on his injured thumb in Tuesday's training session, German daily Bild reported.

Germany boss Joachim Low is expected to field Stuttgart striker Mario Gomez and Schalke's Kevin Kuranyi in the team's front line.
