The Highfield club, which Egyptian defender Ahmed Fathi joined in January, was relegated to the English Championship after just one season in the top flight.

Chairman Kevin McCabe announced the appointment of the former West Brom manager, with the assistance of former Manchester United assistant coach Brian Kidd.

"I'm delighted to announce Bryan Robson's appointment as our new team manager," said McCabe in a press conference.

"Bryan's an experienced manager. We believe he is the team manager that will blend the squad, improve Sheffield United and get us back into the Premiership.

"He's going to have every support from the board. This club intends to be amongst the top ten in the Premiership at least within the next three to five years.

"I think it's a top-class morning for Sheffield United. This clean start with Bryan and Brian Kidd as his assistant, I think is excellent news."

Robson left West Brom in October 2006 after almost two years in charge, and has been free since then, as the 50-year-old is glad to be back in business.

"When you go out of the game you do miss it, so it's great to be back," he said.

"I'm delighted to take the position. I'm really looking forward to the challenge.

"It's a massive club. They've got great support. I do feel that they've got a good group of players."

Egyptian defender Fathi has confirmed his stay with the Blades recently, despite being relegated shortly after his arrival.
