The Egyptian collected 9.08% of the votes contributed by thousands of Bundesliga fans, coming after Dortmund striker Alexander Frei (25.79%) and Werder Bremen's Brazilian playmaker Diego (22.84%).

The 25-year-old striker came third in a hot Top 20 list including the likes of Rafael Van Der Vaart (5), Oliver Kahn (10), Kevin Kuranyi (11) and Thorsten Frings (12).

The result demonstrates Zidan's impressive form with Mainz, despite the Egyptian spending the first half of the season struggling for a place on the Bremen bench.

But since joining Mainz in January, Zidan scored 13 goals in 15 games to act as the highlight of the season for the recently-relegated outfit.

Zidan is almost set for a Mainz exit next season, following the club's relegation the Bundesliga 2.

Hamburg, Stuttgart and Hannover are all knocking on the door to sign the Egyptian, but Hamburg remain the closest team to acquire his services.
