Real Madrid have completed the signing of Argentinean striker Javier Saviola on a free transfer, the Primera Liga champions announced on Friday.

Saviola, who departed Barcelona after the Catalans opted not to renew his contract, penned a four-year deal with Real Madrid.

Real's new coach Bernd Schuster identified Saviola as a target shortly after his appointment and the Rabbit expressed his gratitude for the German tactician.

"I think it is very important for a coach to have this faith in a player. This makes the player more confident, so it is terribly important," Saviola told the press conference in which he was unveiled.

Saviola was rarely used by Barcelona boss Frank Rijkaard due to the world-class attacking trident the Dutchman has at his disposal and the 25-year-old is aware it also won’t be easy to break through Real squad.

"It is going to be complicated to earn a spot. Here, like at Barcelona, players are in healthy competition with each other."

"We all want to play. I’m sure I’ll get several chances throughout the season, as well as my teammates. The most important thing is for us to form a great team in order to thrill the fans."

Saviola is Los Merengues' third signing in the off-season following the arrivals of German defender Christoph Metzelder and former Porto Brazilian defender Pepe.
