The former Livorno boss was unhappy with the media's handling of Italy's disappointing goalless draw with France and became relieved following the precious win over Ukraine.

"We knew it was going to be tough and that no results can be taken for granted," Donadoni was quoted as saying by Calcio Italia magazine after the match.

"I expect the next game will also be classed as the last chance saloon, but we know what the media are like by now. It’s all hot air."

Antonio Di Natale put the Azzurri ahead five minutes before the break but was cancelled out by Andriy Shevchenko's strike in the 72nd minute.

Udinese striker Di Natale was on target again four minutes later to give Italy a much-needed win, which moved them to second place in Group B with 20 points, one behind leaders Scotland.

"We showed great character and temperament. We know that we are still a step behind the other teams at this stage of the season in terms of fitness, but nobody beats us in character."

"There are still some games to go and this result definitely improves our position, but it’s going to be a close group all the way," he concluded.
