A first half goal by Italian striker Luca Toni lifted Bayern Munich to a 1-0 victory over Portuguese side Belenenses 1-0 registering a lackluster comeback to the competition after 11 years.

The 18-million euro marksman broke the deadlock in the 34th minute after controlling Mark Van Bommel's cross and scoring from 7 yards.

The Bavarian giants, who failed to produce their goods, will have to show much more determination and accuracy when the two sides meet for the return leg in Lisbon in two weeks.

Elsewhere Bayer Leverkusen beat Uniao Leiria 3-1 at home. Stefan Kiessling bagged a brace, 19 and 78, in addition to a goal from Simon Rolfes, 32 while Joao Paulo scored the Portuguese side's consolation goal in the 29th minute.

The Slovakian referee Vladimir Hrinak had to show the red card twice to Vratislaw Gresko from Bayern and Faria from Uniao Leiria.
