Mohamed Shawky made his Middlesbrough debut on Wednesday but his side lost to Tottenham 2-0 and bowed out of the Carling Cup.

Shawky played 46 minutes before being substituted by Tom Craddock before Middlesbrough conceded twice to the hosts.

Hossam Ghaly, who was expected to feature for Tottenham in the Carling Cup, didn’t take part in the game.

Middlesbrough most prominent star and Egypt striker Ahmed Hossam missed the game due to injury.

Gareth Bale opened the scoring in the 72nd minute after latching on to a fine through pass from Robbie Keane before slotting home.

Three minutes later, Tom Huddlestone headed an Aaron Lennon cross home to seal the win.

In another match, Premier League holders Manchester United suffered a shocking 2-0 defeat against Coventry City on the same day.

United manager Alex Ferguson fielded a second-string side following the victory over Chelsea over the weekend, but the trick backfired.

Michael Mifsud scored twice for the guests in the 27th and 70th.
