Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho will be out of action for up to eight weeks with a back injury, suffered in the 1-1 Premiership draw with Everton last Sunday.

The Portuguese defender was taken off midway through the first half, and scans proved that he has fractured bones in his back.

"Ricardo has suffered fractures of the small bones on his second, third and fourth vertebrae and will be out for eight weeks," Portugal team doctor Henrique Jones told reporters.

Carvalho will miss Portugal's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Armenia and Finland next week, as well as Chelsea's Champions League clash at Rosenborg on November 28th.

The Blues are already without influential skipper John Terry, full-back Paolo Ferreira and first-choice goalkeeper Petr Cech.
