Mido eyes Egypt return

Ahmed Hossam 'Mido' will miss the African Cup of Nations (CAN) Ghana 2008 due to injury, the Egyptian striker announced.

"I won't be in Ghana," a frustrated Mido told FilGoal.com via phone from England.

Tests showed that Mido suffers an inflammation in the adductor muscle and needs rest for 10 weeks.

The Premiership club are yet to announce the news of Mido's lay-off.

He has been already missing action over the past five weeks with a groin injury.

Mido's absence is bad news for Egypt manager Hassan Shehata, who needs all his big names as the Pharaohs bid to retain the African title they won on home soil in 2006.

Hamburg striker Mohamed Zidan, Zamalek star Amr Zaki and Ahli's Emad Meteb are the only high-profile strikers in Egypt's squad.

The 24-year old Mido had an excellent start with Boro, scoring twice in his first two games, but has not featured since Chelsea's clash last month.

He missed the final in 2006 against Ivory Coast after his infamous touchline spat with Shehata in the 2-1 victory over Senegal in the quarter-finals.

Mido served a six-month ban before returning to Egypt during the African Cup qualifiers.

Africa's premier competition starts on January 20th and ends on February 10th.
