The Bavarian giants struggled with form over the last few weeks after a superb start to the season, suggesting that Hitzfeld could not extend his contract, which runs out next summer.

Moreover, the veteran coach received an offer, which he welcomed, from Euro 2008 co-hosts Switzerland, to take charge of the team after next year's tournament.

The Bild reports also claimed that the names of Lothar Matthaus, Dutch duo Marco Van Basten and Frank Rijkaard have been shortlisted as possible replacements to Hitzfeld.

Meanwhile, Hitzfeld told the newspaper that his focus is on the team's next two games before the winter break.

"I am only concentrating on the next couple of games with Hertha Berlin and Aris in the UEFA Cup, so is the club," the Bayern boss said.

"Maybe there will be talks after that."
