Chelsea have announced that goalkeeper Petr Cech escaped serious injury after scans on Monday proved that he only has a bruised hip.

The giant Czech limped off the Blues' 1-0 victory at Blackburn Rovers on Sunday, but a serious injury was ruled out.

"Scans have shown bruising around Petr's hip and side," read a Chelsea statement.

"We will continue to monitor the situation over the coming days and hope to have him back playing as soon as possible."

However, Cech will miss Chelsea's boxing day game with Aston Villa on Wednesday, as reserve keeper Hilario is expected to deputize.

The London club are having a crisis in goal, with Italian guardian Carlo Cudicini, who is second-choice at Stamford Bridge, is injured as well.
