Egyptian defender Amir Azmi hopes Anorthosis can win the Cypriot League so that he has the opportunity to play in the UEFA Champions League preliminaries.

"Anorthosis are close to securing the league title. I hope my team will end the campaign as winners to allow me participate in the Champions League," Azmi said.

"Taking part in such a prestigious competition may pave the way for me to move to a bigger club," he told FilGoal.com on Thursday.

Successful Adventure

Azmi insists his adventure abroad was a success despite being criticized for failing to secure a move to a high-profile team.

"I did not fail abroad; who says so has personal problems with me. I played great matches with PAOK Saloniki and contributed to their victories in Greece."

"My displays with PAOK earned me a call-up to Egypt national team. I also received a hefty offer from Saudi side Al-Shabab to join them," he added.

The former Zamalek man completed a move to the Saudi outfit, but it turned out to be a nightmare for him.

"Al-Shabab registered four foreigners in their squad although they could only field three players. That's why I decided to depart because I wasn't given much playing time.

The 25-year-old joined Anorthosis in December after terminating his contract with Al-Shabab by mutual consent.
