Both players are suffering from leg muscle injuries they picked up in Sunday's 3-0 thrashing of Liverpool in the Premiership, in which the Portuguese pair scored a goal each.

"We proposed to coach (Luiz Felipe Scolari) that the players be released from the squad and he accepted," squad doctor Henrique Jones told the FPF website on Monday.

Ronaldo is a key figure in Scolari's squad while youngster Nani is just establishing himself.

Portugal play in Group A of in the EURO 2008 finals along with co-hosts Switzerland, Czech Republic and Turkey.
