AS Roma midfielder Daniele de Rossi apologized to fans and teammates for missing the penalty against Manchester United, on Wednesday, in their 1-0 defeat in the Champions league quarter final second leg.

“At the final whistle I apologized to the fans for the missed penalty. It was the worst moment of my career,” De Rossi told Football Italia.

The Roman striker blasted over from the spot in the 28th minute while the result was still goalless.

"I was a little emotional at that moment, not so much for the incident, but because they were still chanting my name at the end of the match. That means so much to me, especially after such a nightmare of a game,” added the Italian player.

De Rossi went into tears after the game as the fans kept chanting his name. The 24-year old player is seen as Roma new prince and the successor of Captain Francesco Totti.
