Gaish target Champions League spot

Al-Gaish leapfrogged Zamalek into second place in the Egyptian League table after claiming a precious 1-0 victory over relegation-threatened Baladeya on Sunday.

Mahmoud Selim 'Shiko' scored the winner in the 73rd minute after a brilliant individual effort.

Military club Al-Gaish moved to second spot with 47 points, one ahead of third-placed Zamalek with five matches to go.

Both sides are enjoying a fine run of results and are competing for the final CAF Champions League qualifying spot.

Al-Gaish are also aiming to reach the Arab Champions League final. They beat Algeria's ES Setif 2-1 at home in the first-leg of the competition's semi final.

Baladeya's defeat widened their relegation worries as they lie second from bottom with 21 points, four adrift of the safety zone.

Al-Gaish could have gone ahead after eight minutes when they were awarded a deserved penalty.

Midfielder Gomaa Mashour stepped-up and succeeded in sending the keeper the wrong way but he was unlucky to see his effort strike the woodwork.

Baladeya striker Hani Al-Egeizi, who will join Egyptian champions Ahli in the summer, had a fierce drive denied by the post in the 20th minute.

Shiko sealed the victory for Al-Gaish when he shrugged off two challengers and hit a low drive that went into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.
