Wigan, who finished the Premiership in 14th place, have made no secret of their desire to sign the Egypt striker.

Coach Steve Bruce was present in Egypt earlier this month to watch Zaki in action during Zamalek's 5-1 Egyptian League victory over Aluminum.

According to Zamalek spokesman Khaled Gabr, Wigan have now made an official approach to the men in white to secure the services of the 25-year-old frontman.

"Wigan offered to sign Zaki on a season-long loan for £1.8 million; with a view to a permanent switch should they pay six million at the season's end," he told FilGoal.com.

"They tabled another £4.2 million bid to sign him on a permanent basis. Zamalek are yet to decide whether to accept either option."

Agent Nader Shawky, who is acting as a mediator between Wigan and Zamalek, revealed that a final agreement is on the horizon.

"Wigan deem Zamalek's £6 million asking price too high, but direct talks between the two parties are being held to reach a suitable agreement," he said.

Representatives from Wigan are expected to arrive in Cairo on May 26th to continue talks with Zamalek.
