"Talks with Pique are at an advanced stage," Begiristain said on Monday.

"I can't deny that he is one of the players we're interested in, but he is involved in the Champions League final so things are on hold."

Pique struggled to find a regular place at United's heart of defense, with the strong presence of duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

The Spanish defender graduated from Barcelona academy, before joining the Premiership champions in 2004. He also spent one season on loan at Real Zaragoza.
