Subsequent to the retirement of Oliver Kahn, Butt joins the Bundesliga champions for the intention of acting as back-up keeper for the inexperienced Michael Rensing.

"We want Hans-Jorg Butt to support the development of our young goalkeeper Michael Rensing, and he's looking forward to this task at Bayern Munich," said chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Butt, who has three caps with Germany, saw his contract with Benfica terminated by mutual consent after an unsuccessful first season.

Apart from his shot-stopping attributes, Butt is an expert in penalty taking as he scored 26 times from the spot in recent spells with Hamburg and Leverkusen.
