Switzerland manager Kobi Kuhn was full of praise for his men following their 2-0 win over Portugal and the great farewell they prepared him.

"We are out but the team was able to make a gift to the fans who have always believed in them. We were excellent and I think this team will remain in their hearts," said Kuhn after the game.

Hakan Yakin struck twice in the second half to give Switzerland their first ever win in the European Championships.

The players and the fans had banners with "Merci Kobi" showing signs of gratitude.

"I didn't know anything about the banner but was touched to receive this expression of gratitude. During my time in charge we have been through some dire straits but, all in all, it has been a wonderful period," added the veteran tactician.

Kuhn will now step down and German tactician Ottmar Hitzfeld will take over immediately.

"Now I will just be a fan of Switzerland and I would like to receive the kind of gift the players gave to the crowd tonight."
