Josef Hickersberger announced his resignation as Austria coach, following the team's exit from EURO 2008.

The co-hosts were eliminated from the first round without achieving any victory in Group B, which included Germany, Poland and Croatia.

"I am tired – I need time off to recharge the batteries. The chapter is closed," he said.

Hickersberger recorded five victories out of 27 games since taking charge of Austria in 2006, as the team only managed to score a spot kick in the European championship.

"We were very well-organized in defense, but we just couldn't get things right in attack and that made the difference," he added.
