The British network said that representatives from Manchester United and members from Portugal's medical staff met to discuss the issue and whether it is necessary for him to go under the knife.

The 23-year-old winger sustained the injury during Portugal's EURO 2008 campaign.

Portugal's doctors said that Ronaldo is set for surgery at the weekend. However, the Red Devils bosses have stressed that a decision is still to be reached.

A statement on the club's website said: "Procedures are in place to seek specialist advice, in order to finalize the treatment plan as soon as possible."

The surgery will rule him out of United's pre-season but he'll be fit for their season's opener against Newcastle on August 16.
